Passionate About Baking

Family Traditions

When I was five years old, I started to love learning how to bake. My grandmother and aunt taught me how to bake; I first learned how to make homemade chocolate chip cookies. I loved how precise you had to be when measuring ingredients and you always had to make sure you were sticking with the recipes. As I got older, I learned how to make more complex desserts like caramel cake with caramel drizzle frosting and chocolate Devil’s Food cake with vanilla buttercream icing. I am passionate about baking because of how many traditions it holds for my family. Every Easter, my mom and I make homemade sugar cookies shaped like bunny rabbits. My Dad and brothers love it when they come home from a long day of playing golf and they walk into the house with fresh cookies right out of the oven. I always learned how important it was that if you are the hostess of a get-together or party, people love freshly baked, homemade desserts. I have collected over 30 different cookbooks for desserts you can bake. One of my favorite baking recipe books I own is solely devoted to cupcakes and its’ entirety. I have learned not only how to bake them well, but also how to plate them and decorate them for different birthdays, holidays, and special occasions. My all-time favorite cupcake display I have made were red velvet cupcakes with vanilla buttercream icing and Braves baseball pennants (made of fondant). These were made for my younger brother’s 13th birthday party. The birthday party celebration was after a Braves game, and I decided what better way to celebrate than Braves homemade cupcakes. I love seeing the smiles on everyone’s faces after they tried the cupcakes, I spent hours making. It is a sigh of relief once the first bite has been taking all the way up until the last bite. Overall, I have learned the importance of passing down family traditions and keeping those traditions alive. It is so important for me to do this because everyone I know in my family is so deeply passionate about baking, and I will always remember that. Baking comes from the heart, and I think that’s why I love it so much because I know no matter what, my grandmother is always with me. It is a passion because of how much endless joy it brings me and the continuous smile that never leaves my face when I am in the kitchen baking.

My all-time favorite dessert to bake and eat would be homemade strawberry cupcakes with strawberry buttercream icing on top. The cake is so moist, and you can tell how fresh it is when you use strawberries. Whenever I plan to make this type of cake, I ensure that I go to the local Farmer’s Market to get fresh strawberries. Using fresh ingredients is very important because it adds a whole new flavor dimension to the cake. This has been one of the most important lessons I have learned from baking with my grandmother. She engraved that in the head and I will continue to do this as I bake throughout my life. Overall, baking makes me feel calm and less stressed because of how much I enjoy baking for myself and others. I love seeing the smiling faces of my family and/or friends when they try the desserts I have made. A dream of mine was to one day open a brick-and-mortar bakery in downtown Nashville, Tennessee. My grandmother also lives in Nashville, and I thought that would be a great way to keep the legacy of baking going. I am looking forward to the days when I have children and can teach them the ways of baking and bake for them too. Baking is a great life skill I have been able to pick up and learn. I may not be great at cooking, but I am glad I can make up for that by my top-notch baking skills. Baking is such a huge passion of mine because of the lifelong skills it brings with it. I have been able to learn to follow directions precisely and measure along with sometimes having to compute measurements on the fly to make up for not having the most accurate measuring tools. I will cherish every moment I have ever gotten to bake with my family and will always continue to carry on the legacy. Baking is a skill that has been passed down from generation to generation in my family and I will make sure baking continues. I am so passionate about baking, and I hope that maybe one day I can make a career out of doing something I love. In the future, I hope to learn to bake even more complex things like different desserts that are famous from around the world. I also hope to travel and visit bakeries around the world.
